With a capacity of 8,100 20-foot long containers and carrying about 4,000 shipping containers or 46,000 tons of cargo of Asian manufactured goods, the MOL Competence arrived at JAXPORT on January 5. The ship’s journey began in Hong Kong, passed through the Suez Canal before crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to arrive in Jacksonville.
JAXPORT is a major economic asset to the region. Key enhancements at the port that will boost trade efforts include an intermodal container transfer facility that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, 100-gauge cranes being built to better serve larger ships and efforts to improve rail lines.
