Health Care Collaborations Strengthen Area’s Medical Industry

Northeast Florida has a world-class health care system and is known for its collaboration within the life sciences industry by working together to develop innovative solutions for health care issues and needs.

Mayo Clinic and United Therapeutics Corporation announced a partnership to build and operate a lung restoration center on the Mayo campus in Jacksonville. The goal is to significantly increase the volume of transplant lungs by preserving and restoring selected marginal donor lungs, making them viable for transplantation

The restored lungs will be made available to patients at Mayo Clinic and other transplant centers throughout the United States.

“At Mayo Clinic, we are committed to delivering the highest quality of care to each and every patient,” says Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, chief executive officer of Mayo Clinic’s campus in Florida. “Our collaboration with United Therapeutics is a great example of how we are continuously looking for new ways to improve access to care, expand the science and improve patient outcomes across the United States.”

Baptist Health and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have partnered to create a joint cancer program to enhance patient access to MD Anderson’s treatment protocols and translational research.

The Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is anticipated to open in the fall of 2015, providing a single destination for highly coordinated multidisciplinary cancer care for adults in the region. This collaboration will extend the treatment, research and expertise the Houston facility is known for in Northeast Florida and southern Georgia by providing cancer care needs, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivor support.
